Analysis of Song Lyrics

Change Persona - Working Progress

{Verse}
I saw you walking home in the dark
Are you thinking about me?
You stand in that same spot everyday
Sweating tears of joy running down my face

{Chorus}
But you're a working progress
I don't like to be ignored
But it'll take me time to progress but
I'll just lay here on the floor

{Verse}
I lay on my bed every night
Start to pray that I'll get through
I always wind up thinking about you
My girlfriend's freaking out, what should I do?

{Chorus}
But you're a working progress
I don't like to be ignored
It'll take me time to progress but
I'll just lay here on the floor

{Solo}

{Chorus x2}
But you're a working progress
I don't like to be ignored
It'll take me time to progress but
I'll just lay here on the floor

------------------------------------------Analysis---------------------------------------------

Some of the lines from the song have been acted out, which relates to the song. Others have been band performance clips to give a sense of power to certain parts of the song, or to emphasise certain lines and words.

'I saw you walking home in the dark'
The actor looks back nervously, as if she thinks she's being followed.

'Are you think about me?'
The lead singer smiles at the camera, instigating that he's happy that the main actor may be thinking about him.

'You stand in that same spot everyday'
The lead singer is sitting on a wall, and looking into the distance, as if looking at the main actor. The camera then cross dissolves to the girl walking.

'Sweating tears of joy running down my face'
A single light from a lamp post is shown, giving unique camera shots to a weird line.

'But you're a working progress
I don't like to be ignored
It'll take me time to progress but
I'll just lay here on the floor'
Entirely band performance as this is trying to emphasise the power of the chorus.

'I sit on my bed every night
Start to pray that I'll get through
I always wind up thinking about you
My girlfriend's freaking out, what should I do?'
The lead singer sings on the wall for the first line, where you can see him emphasising the particular line to show his desperation.
The second and third line show a drug deal taking place, and the lead singer then pushes them out of the way for the girl to walk past safely. This is to show how much he cares for this girl that he'd put himself in danger for her.
The third and fourth line is to also emphasise the importance of the line by putting emotion into the singing. It is also used to tell more of the story and the build up to the chorus.

'But you're a working progress
I don't like to be ignored
But it'll take me time to progress but
I'll just lay here on the floor'

The second chorus is all band performance to once again give the chorus a sense of power.

{Last Two Choruses}

The last two choruses sum up the narrative. It basically fits as the chorus is a powerful part of the song, and what is shown is the main actor going off the rails and thinking of committing suicide, but the lead singer pulls her back and away from her death from falling from a high drop. As the last chord in the last chorus rings out, the actor turns around but the lead singer has dissapeared. Nothing has shown clearly who or what has pulled her away, but has left the main actor smiling.

Researching the Music Industry

How are music videos made?

Music videos are made by complex planning, research and construction, which involves a lot of time and effort. Music video companies have to put all of this in account before getting started. They need to figure out what is going to be in the video, the actor(s), setting, costumes, camera work, lighting, props, etc. They also need to research what videos are being done at that time to try and compete with them, and make theirs the better out of the bunch.

Main Companies that show Music Videos

There are a lot of companies that show music videos. Here are some examples:
  • Virgin Media
  • Yahoo
  • YouTube
  • MySpace
  • MTV
  • Warner Music Group
  • Sony Music
  • Universal Music Group
There are so many more but these are the biggest names out there at this present time.

Where to find Music Videos

You can find music videos in many places. For example, the internet is a great source of finding videos. Typing the phrase 'music videos' into a search engine comes up with immediate links to websites such as MySpace and YouTube. You can also find music videos on the television. There are many music channels on digital TV that provide these channels. Some examples of this are MTV, Kerrang! and Scuzz.

The Purpose of Music Videos

The purpose of music videos is to advertise the singer(s) or band to the world for a larger and more global fan base. It is used for promotion with the world to show who they are and what they offer. The video is also to make the band look unique and very talented, so the audience can see this when they view their music video.

Categories of Three Music Videos

Three Music Videos

There are three different categories of music videos out there. They consist of:

  • Performance based
  • Narrative based
  • Conceptual
Performance

An example of performance based videos is Green Day. The point that the video mainly consists of is performance based clips, with little parts of narrative.
Performance based videos usually fall under the rock genre. This is to show how powerful playing music is and show it's importance.

Narrative

An example of a narrative music video is Evanescence - Bring Me To Life. This video has the same sort of idea that we had for our music video.
A narrative video falls under many genres of music as they all have griping story lines. This video is a goth/metal genre.

Conceptual

A conceptual video is a video that has no meaning behind it, but can be very random. However, our video does not contain this point.
An example of this is Daft Punk - Da Funk. This is a very random video that doesn't seem to make any sense.

Goodwin's Analysis of Music Videos

Goodwin's analysis of music videos focuses mainly around how the genre is used in a piece of film. The music video is important in determining how the genre characteristics engage a specific target audience. Here is how Goodwin's five main points of genre characteristics are used in our music video:

1) Genre Characteristics: As our media video is in the genre of Rock/Punk, we decided to base our film set on the roof of a car park to signify rebellion, anarchy and power. Another important characteristic in our genre is our use of narrative and performance, switching systematically between the two to enhance the contrasting differences between the two distinctive parts. Along with this we had to look to Goodwin and his theory to allow us to match the stereotypical costume of our genre within our video through the use of jeans, vans, converse, wristbands, hoodies, long hair, all in dark colours. In keeping with the idea of darkness, we also decided to film our video at night, as this would emphasize the idea of rebellion and the feelings of emotion established with punk-rock.
As our music video is band based, we had to include many shots of drums, guitar and bass etc, as this is what would be expected to be seen by our target audience.

2) Within our music video we made sure that we had a relationship between the visual video and the lyrics.
"I saw you walking home in the dark" - Our video is based on our main character walking around the streets at night time, and these lyrics symbolize this.
"Start to pray that I'll get through" - This is a reference to drug use, showing that there's a mind struggle with the thought of taking drugs.
"Thinking about you" - Whilst this lyric is being sung we can see can see the main character walking towards a bus shelter. This symbolizes that the main character is thinking about the main character.
"I don't like to be ignored" - Through the video we see the lead singer following the main character. This shows how the lead singer does not want to be ignored by her and thus, follows her until she notices him.

3) In our video we have created relationships between music and visuals by the camera being handheld when the music is heavy with lots of pans as a result of the speed of the music.
The music symbolizes the character walking with a steady beat and slow tempo.
When the chorus fades out, we have a focus pull and that shot goes from blurry to clear.
Drone sound of music is in time with the cross dissolve between two characters.

4) We use many close ups such as the re-occuring motifs that we included, for example, sitting on the wall idle whilst singing verses.
"Head-banging" is shown to signify the heavy music genre. Fast movement parts in contrast to narrative whilst chorus is being played.
Close ups of lead singer singing and at the start of our video posing.
Music and lyrics reflect emotions felt by actors

5) Our reference to the notion of looking in our video is the use of an ipod at the start of the video showing other change persona songs. We also included looking out across the skyline as this represents the lead singer looking for the main actress. shots also with a reference of looking include over the shoulder shot, the idea of the main actress being followed by the singer, somebody looking through the windscreen of a car from the back seat. We also focused on two lights that blur as a reference to the idea of reminiscing over someone from the past looking at it once and then another light again.
Voyeuristic treatment of females is focused on the main actress for example, the close up of the mouth at the end of the music video is a sexual reference.

6) Product placement is included in our music video, through the use of the ipod at the beginning and from what we have learnt in our research of skins, we have tried to follow the conventions of a traditional teen drama.
